North East Fife Liberal Democrat MP Sir Menzies Campbell held a meeting with Dr Liam Fox, Secretary of State for Defence, yesterday (Wednesday 8th December) to discuss the future of RAF Leuchars. Following the meeting, Sir Menzies said:
“I had a totally constructive and helpful meeting with the Defence Secretary. I emphasized again to him the strategic case for the retention of Leuchars in its present role as the RAF base for the air defence of the northern half of the United Kingdom. I pointed out that since the decision to deploy three Typhoon Squadrons at Leuchars none of the strategic reasons to do so have changed; that Typhoon equipped 6 Squadron is already operating from Leuchars and that substantial sums of public money have been spent to equip Leuchars to fulfil the role for which it has been earmarked. I impressed upon him that the defence case for RAF Leuchars is overwhelming.
“Dr Fox emphasised that no decisions about the future of RAF bases in Scotland have been taken but I gained the distinct impression that he was sympathetic towards the strategic arguments which we discussed.â€
