On Thursday evening Ming Campbell encouraged those from black and minority ethnic (BME) communities to become engaged with the Liberal Democrats in an effort to make his party more representative of modern day Britain.
Speaking at a specially held reception for members of the minority ethnic communities, Ming promoted the £200,000 Diversity Fund, set up to support Liberal Democrat candidates from under-represented groups to get elected.
Commenting, Ming said:
Since being elected as Liberal Democrat leader, I have made a personal commitment to making my party more representative of the communities we serve. I want to encourage people who have not previously engaged in politics: join us, get selected and get elected.
Former TV presenter and campaigner, Floella Benjamin who spoke at the reception said:
Most people think of politicians as being middle aged, middle class and white. This can stop people who don’t match this stereotype getting involved in politics or joining a political party.
By encouraging different groups to engage in the political system a party not only benefits from the talents that exists within all our communities but also ensures that the party’s views truly reflect those of our whole society.
Simon Woolley, Head of Operation Black Vote, who also addressed the reception said:
We are working with the Liberal Democrats to help build an effective platform to gain more black and minority members, more directly elected BME politicians and greater confidence for BME communities to vote for them.
