Liberal Democrat Leader Menzies Campbell has become the first party leader to back the NFU’s Why Farming Matters campaign.

During a meeting with NFU Director General Richard Macdonald, Menzies Campbell said:

“Farming is a key part of our economy, identity and heritage. As the Member of Parliament for a rural constituency I have always appreciated how much farming matters.

“With climate change posing one of the biggest threats of the 21st century, farming has an even bigger role to play.

“Liberal Democrats believe that farming will continue to be essential to the country as a whole.

“I am pleased to give my support to the National Farmers Union’s campaign.”

  1. So long as they’re not asking for (yet more) subsidy…

I hope that the Liberal Democrats can start calling for the abolition of the Common Agricultural Policy. It harms consumers and the environment and distorts the agricultural market – something which is not in the long term interests of British farming.

Support for – and raising awareness of – the production and procurement of food at local level is crucial to tackiling the food miles issue which I believe has reached scandalous proportions. On Anglesey we are campaigning for a badge for shops, food outlets and public places including schools which use local food products.

i feel that farming is a large part of living! it is crucial that we have noticed cities have become very large and over crowded! is there anything you can do for me? i am claustrophobic of people there needs to be more farms full of chickens! i like animals! maybe you could do something like feeding them more and maybe letting humans able to purchase less food so they dont get as fat. dont you agree? i was completely joking about the campaign in anglesey. speak to you soon darling.
