NATO CONCERN OVER NORTH KOREA’S “BELLIGERENCE AND PROVOCATION” – CAMPBELL

Ming Campbell MPSir Menzies Campbell has expressed his concern at the developments in North Korea with regard to their recent nuclear testing.

Speaking on his return from a NATO conference in Oslo where this was discussed, Sir Menzies said:

“There was much concern at the NATO conference this weekend over North Korea’s belligerence and provocation. For once China and Russia, who have been reluctant to be critical of the regime in the past, expressed themselves in the strongest possible terms after what was thought to be an underground nuclear explosion. The subsequent launches are deeply disturbing. This will be a test for the resolve of the new American President in particular and the international community in general.

“The United Nations will now become the focus for urgent diplomatic action with severe sanctions as the most likely outcome.

“There is some evidence of an internal political struggle in North Korea which may explain these military activities as a means of distracting attention once again from the failure by the government to provide adequate food for the North Korean people.”
