Commenting on the news that the BBC is to take over the cost of the World Service, currently funded by the Foreign Office, Sir Menzies Campbell MP said:
“When the BBC takes on financial responsibility for the World Service it has also to assume responsibility for ensuring that the unique characteristics of the Service are preserved.
“The World Service is renowned for its impartiality and independence and has its own particular style and culture. Dilution of these features would rob us of something special.”
