DEFENCE CASE FOR RAF LEUCHARS “UNQUESTIONED” – CAMPBELL

Sir Menzies Campbell MP has said that the defence case for RAF Leuchars is “unquestioned” following reports about its future.

He said:

“In spite of speculation, once again the Ministry of Defence has confirmed that no decisions have been taken about RAF bases in the United Kingdom.

“Reports to the contrary from anonymous sources will not detract from the campaign for RAF Leuchars.

“The defence case for Leuchars and it’s role in the defence of Britain’s northern airspace is unquestioned.

“Leuchars is within 80 miles of 4 million people, which is approximately 80 per cent of the Scottish population. This is significant because it relates directly to the most serious “Tier One” risks for the central belt of Scotland highlighted in the National Security Strategy published by the Defence Secretary and the Foreign Secretary earlier this year. These potential targets include a nuclear power station, chemical plants and gasworks, not to mention two major cities.

“RAF Leuchars is uniquely positioned to provide the necessary protection to the bulk of Scotland’s population against these risks because of its proximity and response time for interception. As has been demonstrated on countless occasions, the positioning of the Quick Reaction Alert at Leuchars has provided a necessary and effective response to potential incursions into UK airspace.”
