SNP ADMISSION ON LACK OF EU LEGAL ADVICE “SHOWS CONTEMPT FOR THE PEOPLE OF SCOTLAND”

Scottish Liberal Democrat MP Sir Menzies Campbell has blasted the SNP Scottish Government for its “contempt for the Scottish people” after it admitted that it did not possess any legal advice on EU membership in the event of an independent Scotland.

This staggering revelation comes after the Scottish Government have spend vast sums of public money in court to avoid publishing the evidence it said it had, after it was ordered to so do by the Information Commissioner.

Sir Menzies, who is Chairman of the Scottish Liberal Democrat Home Rule Commission and is a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee which took evidence from constitutional experts on this subject last week in Westminster, said:

“This announcement drives a horse and cart through the Scottish Government’s position on the European Union. But more than that, it shows contempt for the people of Scotland and a complete unwillingness to engage in the detail of the debate about the consequences of independence.

“If the SNP have to be forced into coming clean on this issue, how can we take their word on anything else?

“The Foreign Affairs Committee took evidence in Westminster last week from five constitutional experts, all of whom confirmed that Scotland would be required to make a fresh application for membership of the EU. Having admitted that they have not taken legal advice, the SNP should now admit that these expert views represent the correct position.”
