Sir Menzies Campbell MP has highlighted the serious questions that the “long awaited†Iraq Inquiry needs to answer as it gets under way in London today.
Sir Menzies said:
“This long awaited inquiry has a number of serious questions to answer. Why was it that Tony Blair felt it necessary for Great Britain to align so closely with George W Bush? Was the intention always to remove Saddam Hussein and bring about regime change?
“Why did the Cabinet, with the notable exception of Robin Cook, not display greater independence? Why were there no proper preparations for the restructuring of Iraq after Saddam was toppled? What persuaded the Attorney General to abandon his original reservations about the legality of military action?
“Liberal Democrats were the only party who consistently voted against the war and this inquiry vindicates this decision.”
