Sir Menzies Campbell is calling for the 2012 Olympic torch to pass through St Andrews when it travels around the UK. In a letter to the Chair of the Olympic Organising Committee Lord Sebastian Coe and Olympics Minister Tessa Jowell, Sir Menzies stated the case for St Andrews to play a part in the Olympic torch’s tour and asked for sympathetic consideration.
In his letter Sir Menzies, who is not only the MP for North East Fife but a former Olympic athlete himself, said:
“St Andrews’s sporting tradition is known throughout the world and with golf coming to the Games in 2016 it would be entirely appropriate for the torch to come to St Andrews. The opening sequences of Chariots of Fire were filmed on the iconic West Sands in St. Andrews and would provide a wonderful backdrop.
“I have no doubt that the people of St Andrews and particularly the children would provide an enthusiastic welcome. Please do give St. Andrews sympathetic consideration.â€
